Agilent Technologies

Agilent Technologies, which is an American public research, development, and manufacturing company, was the S&P 500’s top loss on May 15. After gaining for two consecutive trading weeks, Agilent Technologies started this week on a weaker note and declined as the week progressed. On Tuesday, Agilent Technologies opened the day lower and closed the day at nine-month low price levels.

Weak fiscal second-quarter earnings data

The selling pressure in Agilent Technologies increased on Tuesday amid the release of weaker-than-expected fiscal second-quarter earnings data. According to management, the EPS in the fiscal second quarter was $0.65—less than the EPS of $0.58 recorded in the same period last year but in line with analysts’ expected EPS of $0.65. The revenues in the reported period were $1.206 billion, which is less than analysts’ estimated revenue of $1.209 billion.

Weak outlook

Management expects the EPS in the fiscal third quarter to be $0.61–$0.63 on revenues of $1.19 billion–$1.21 billion. Analysts expected an EPS of $0.65 with revenues of $1.21 billion. The revenue miss and weaker-than-expected fiscal third-quarter outlook weighed on Agilent Technologies on Tuesday.

Agilent Technologies declined 9.7% on May 15 and closed the day at $62.5. Agilent Technologies is a part of S&P 500 healthcare sector, which declined 1.3% on Tuesday.
